Out the box

DES231 - Assignment 2 - 'Future artefact'.

Brief:

Over six weeks concept, develop, and fabricate an artifact that belongs in this future world that does not yet exist in relation to the insight produced for the previous assignment.

Insight: "Majority of sneakers in 2027 will be tailored to the individual as a means of inclusion."

WEEK 1:

Beginning this assignment was not so hard once we has the understanding of what an 'artefact' would be, however, just because it wasn't hard to beginning doesn't mean everything went to plan.

To begin the journey I needed to produce a systems map of how the industry revolving around sneaker culture works now and what it would look like in the future with my insight in effect.

Map produced during first lecture for assignment 2 - Quick fire

As can be seen above, the systems map was very busy but it was just to start my thinking off.

Systems map refined during the week for better understanding and progress.

WEEK 2:

Within week 2 I had brainstormed 12 ideas where I would choose 3 (blue text) that I felt suit best.

12 Brainstormed ideas:

  1. New style of shoe box - New look, new construction method, uses recycled material but implements materials used in footwear design that is purchased?

  2. Faster way to clean shoes - Material has lots of layers allowing user to easily peel off top layer to reveal a clean shoe. (screen protector type vibe)

  3. Shoe 'flatpack' where shoe come unassembled allowing the user to 'make' their shoe.

  4. VR simulation/catalogue producing the sneaker desired, allowing the user to design on it later allowing them to see what it looks like on feet.

  5. mix and match shoe soles - soles of shoes will be detachable to change it up for users.

  6. AR app where shoes designs appear when looked at through phone.

  7. new way to store shoes - futuristic shelving etc.

  8. AR projection print - Shoes are plain, when a design is created by the user, the user will take a photo of the desired shoe with the design overlaying imprinting the design.

  9. Robotic tech (AI) used in the manufacturing aspect of sneakers.

  10. VR Experience for Rookie Shoe Designers - Using VR as a way to design shoes - so that they are more prepared when it comes to actually making it.

  11. VR Shoe making simulation.

  12. A Pen Tool that can change colors whenever you say the color - lets the user create more with one tool.

  13. MR Lenses that brings your shoe to life.

With the three chosen ideas I generated mood boards for 'Final concepts' relating to the idea.

- New style of shoe box - New look, new construction method, uses recycled material but implements materials used in footwear design that is purchased?

- A Pen Tool that can change colors whenever you say the color - lets the user create more with one tool.

- VR Experience for Rookie Shoe Designers - Using VR as a way to design shoes - so that they are more prepared when it comes to actually making it.

From these three ideas I choose one that I would continue to progress with and develop into the future artefact, and that was the 'New style of shoe box - New look, new construction method, uses recycled material but implements materials used in footwear design that is purchased?' idea.

WEEK 3:

Now knowing the idea I wanted to continue developing in to the final artefact, I produced mood boards for; Colour, Shape and Material.

SHAPE COLOUR MATERIAL

Soon after the mood boards I began to produce sketch's for shapes and forms on what the box could consist of.

WEEK 4:

Some of the sketch ideas produced, with me choosing one and developing it in 3D modeling.

WEEK 5:

During week 5 of the assignment, I began to 3D model a few of the sketch's I produced prior with some differences between them. Here is the base model of one of my sketch's I produced which I choose to continue with as the new shoe box shape.

With this 3D model I was soon to render in shoes and colour in relation to how I intend the box to fit the insight.

WEEK 6:

Approaching due day for this assignment, I produced multiple renders of how the final artefact would look with multiple branded sneaker customs. Here are a few a few shots:

The sneaker boxes aesthetics are based off the custom sneakers colour-way or design. Here you see how the box replicates the colours used within the custom shoe while also implementing a new 'Diamond' form shape.
