Design brief:

  • Students will conduct research into the home, social, and city connected systems. First understanding how larger systems work within the city, before analysing the products and elements which make up these systems.

  • In  this phase students will:

  • - Analyse a city or home system, identifying areas or opportunities for improvement.

  • - Engage in product design research to identify best practice

  • - Students will illustrate these future systems using storytelling to explore how these scenarios could unfold.

The problem I'm addressing:

Food wastage within households.

Design Journey:

The design journey is my individual work over a course of 6 weeks for DES232

My ideas started with a fruit bowl and cookbooks. However, as you can see I ended up with a Fridge as my final design.

1. What is the problem or challenge?

The problem i'm facing is around the idea of food wastage around households.

2. How did you go about solving the problem through design?

After previous concepts, I decided to merge my two ideas to create a new type of fridge that has an interactive screen that notifies members of the house when food is nearing expiry through smelling and infrared sensors.

3. What is your solution?

The solution I came up with was an interactive glass screen for a fridge door. The interactive screen will provide the user the ability to know when food is degrading and when it is at its peak to eat.

4.What type of immediate impact will it have for the intended user or user groups?

The immediate impact will be a change in lifestyle, as the users household will begin to learn new habits once the ball begins to roll with the fridges notifications and identification stratigies

5.How is your product Smart/Connected so that it learns from and informs the larger network?

The product will be "smart" as it will send notifications to the users mobile device and constantly monitor foods health and update the household on that aspect. It will constantly update, with new information, so it can help the user understand certain foods that may have worse effects than others when off and etc.
